During the months that Bella and Edward married, had Renesmee, and the Volturi, Carlisle had recently received an e-mail concerning a close friend of his and her family. The friend, one that Carlisle had been with before the rest, had been worried about something going on. Carlisle tried to reassure her that nothing was wrong. That everything would be fine. His friend had sometimes overreacted but as one e-mail was finally sent back to him, he knew that he had been wrong to make her think things like that. The email read:
Dear Carlisle,
You were wrong. This will be the last e-mail you get from me so read it and listen to what it has to say. My family will be killed but I am sending my daughter, Joanna, your way. She knows what to do to get these guys off her trail. It might take time but she will be coming to you. I’m sorry I won’t be able to join her but this is the only way. I can’t explain much but Joanna will have a note and your crest that you gave me so long ago. Please take care of her. Joanna is already having a hard time leaving us but she knows what she is doing and will help you in any way possible. Carlisle, my brother, my friend, I am going to miss you. Watch for Joanna.
Your Friend,
Kerri Murphy
When Carlisle received this e-mail, he was very worried about this Kerri. It wasn’t like her to send him something like this unless it was true. Carlisle had Alice keep an eye on Joanna just in case. It had been two months since Carlisle heard anything from his friend and he feared the worst. But as the third month came to a close, Joanna finally showed up. She looked horrible but she had been out in the wild for those three months just trying to get to them. She had gone everywhere, throwing off where she could be going.
Everyone, at first, didn’t believe she was who she said she was. Carlisle did when he saw the crest and note his friend had talked about. He welcomed her with open arms. And in the end the rest of them did too. They now had a new member of the Cullen Family, Joanna Cullen.
As soon as Carlisle explained everything to Joanna, she was sent off to school everyday to make it seem like they really adopted a new teen into their family. She joins the rest of the teenagers at Forks High School in the middle of her supposed senior year. Carlisle had yet to figure out where he was going to move his family to keep them safe, so for now they stay in Forks. What’s one more year? Joanna grieves for her lost family and therefore doesn’t talk to anyone but the Cullens very much. It's harder for her to be in school alone when she has no one to talk to. While the other teens at Forks try to get to know her, Joanna is quiet and pushes them away to make sure she doesn't hurt them or isn't the cause of them getting hurt. The group that killed her coven is still out there after all. They will find their way to Forks sooner or later and Joanna just doesn't want to be the reason that others get hurt.
Two months have passed since Joanna started school and it seems the vampires that killed her family have found their way to Washington. People are dying in Washington, like they had been when James showed his head and Victoria after him. Joanna is scared for her new family and for herself. What do these vampires want that they would track her all the way to Forks, Washington?
